Forest Lawn Memorial Parks
Where: Forest Lawn Memorial Parks, Cypress, CA
Who: Pickel Studio and Forest Lawn
Completed: Spring 2001
What: Forest Lawn was ready to open the next phase of their outdoor garden mausoleums on the Cypress property. They wanted 32 crypt fronts with mosaic and a central mosaic feature. The owner had chosen Christ Praying in the Garden of Gethsemane by Heinrich Hofman.
Plan of Action: Pickel Studio created a full size drawing of the painting and then created mosaic sections on paper backing. Foreman Paul Thornton and his crew fabricated the crypt fronts in the studio. They installed the Christ feature on-site in the cemetery to be permanently mounted to the wall.
The feature went from this:

Detail:
The project began by selecting each color to be used in the crypt fronts and feature. Once approved, fabrication began in the studio.
Foreman Paul Thorton and Keith Dewees display one of the 32 crypt fronts. Real 14K gold leaf mosaic is used for the gold color.
After the wall is prepared, Paul begins to mix cement for on-site installation of the main mosaic feature.
Layers of cement are applied with calculated precision.
Finishing touches are applied.
